I always wanted to know how to play guitar well.
No. I’m not going to become a master at it, but I want to become good at it. So I’m applying the same principle of forming habit of practicing guitar playing as in building six pack abs workout habit.
First things first.
Define the habit.
Six pack abs workout habit is a day in and day out strength training workout that targets all the large muscles in the body consistently and intensively.
Same with guitar learning habit – knowing how to play guitar requires playing it daily. And playing variety of most important chords daily.
Define the plan how to build your habit.
In achieving six pack abs, you will build the habit of strength training by doing your strength training routine 6 days per week with one day off for about 2 and a half months – exactly 71 days. And the strength training session will take 15-20 minutes. No longer.
In building playing guitar habit, I’ll play my guitar for 15-20 minutes every day for 71 days.
Have your tools very close to you.
This is very important!
If you want to get anything done, you have to remove all the BS and obstacles standing in your way.
Travel time to the gym is a big obstacle!
It’s ok to have a gym membership with all the fancy machines and tools. But don’t rely on it too much.
You should have 3 other six pack abs strength training stations ready to be used anytime.
One at your home.
One at your work.
One somewhere in close proximity to your house.
These six pack abs workout stations consist only of one special tool – pull up bar. For every other exercise you don’t need any equipment at all.
I have pull up bar mounted at work at home and there is always a pull up bar on the playground where my kids play. And while they play catch with their friends, I’m doing my sets of pull ups.

For my guitar playing habit build up, same as six pack abs workout habit build up, I’ll have the most important tool of the trade very close to me and ready to be picked up.
I will have 2-3 guitars at the immediate proximity to me. One at home, one at work and one in my car. 3 basic inexpensive ready to be banged and scratched anywhere guitars. The more they are banged and scratched the better. Because that is the sign I’m using them often and in any even inconvenient situations.
The other day for example I picked up my guitar that I have in my car and played for 7 minutes on gas station while filling my cars tank.
I’ll remove anything staying in my way to pick them up.
And you too should do it building your own six pack abs workout habit.
Keep it death simple
Your habit building has to be death simple.
And it is.
5X max reps of pull ups
111 reps – push ups
111 reps – squat jumps
77 reps – floor crunches
That’s it! All you need is pull up bar! And than just make 7 and a half steps to come to it from the kitchen and do the pull ups. And than move on to a different exercise.
Drop on the floor and start doing your push ups. And so on, quickly to completion.
With my guitar learning habit, I’ll do those 7 and a half steps to pick up the guitar and play 5 favorite songs I’m learning. Or I’ll repeat 5 basic chords around for 10 circles if I can’t play a song yet.

Keep it short but intensive
There is no need to spend huge amount of time in gym working out. Gym rats are just that rats that don’t have anything else to do.
I hate spending long time in gyms. I’ll tell you something not that many people know about me – I hate gyms!
Ideally I would really do my six pack abs workout outside in the park with fresh air and fresh breeze.
And you my fellow six pack abs achiever on mission should too.
The simple effective six pack abs strength training routine I described above can be done anywhere. And preferably outside.
I have 2 young kids and I don’t have time for anything. When I take them to the park and they are playing on children structure I am already thinking – time to start my six pack abs workout now!
I’m doing my six pack abs workout and at the same time I’m still playing with my kids.
Plus I’m showing them a great example of how to stay fit for life!
I’m chasing them first playing catch – warm up.
Than I start doing my pull ups, push ups, squat jumps and crunches.
Kids love it!
They think I’m some kind of crazy silly guy. And they love to be around crazy, silly people.
While I do my six pack abs workout and bunch of kids run around me thinking how cool! “He is one of us!” Other overweight adults really think I am crazy.
But instead of that, they should be doing the six pack abs strength training workout routine with me. And being a good fun example for their kids too. Why not?
